Tuesday morning Holden woke up with a fever. He played and was happy all morning. I gave him Motrin about 11:30 and then that afternoon his fever just sky rocketed, to 104 under his arm, which probably means it was really around 105. He was shaking so badly with the chills and I was freaking out that he was going to have another seizure. Finally around 3:30 I gave him Tylenol and by 5 PM he was running around the living room. That was about as far as it got, although he did have that little petechiae rash on his foot.

His fever was gone yesterday then this morning I noticed he had a rash on his foot. I thought the rash was just his eczema flaring up, but I called the doctor and they said I should bring him in and it turns out he has hand foot mouth disease. He has a rash on both feet and in his mouth. It sounds much worse than it is. Apparently it is very common in preschoolers – who knew. At least I know what caused the fever.

Holden seems fine. He is eating and playing and everything. Colin has not caught it, but that is just par for the course. Holden catches everything out there and Colin doesn’t. Colin must just bring it home and pass it on to Holden.

Not such a great start to the winter – let’s just hope that Holden is building up all his immunity now!

Sophia caught hand, foot, and mouth at preschool last month too. Her mouth and tongue hurt so badly that she could hardly eat anything but ice cream for several days. And I know she wasn’t faking it because she didn’t even want cookies or any other of her favorite crunchy treats. And then Cassidy caught it and had a nasty rash all over her feet and legs and tummy. I’m so glad that’s all over with! Cassidy has had sooo many more illnesses than Sophia ever had as a baby, so I’m hoping she’s building up her immunity early too!
