Colin and the Times, part two

I told you about the New York Times, here’s the photographic evidence - I’m working at home this morning, so I got to have breakfast with Colin, and as soon as I pulled the Times over to look at the home page he started yelling “Papay! Papay!” Jess gave him the main section and he was off and running…

Looking for letters, there have to some big ones somewhere…

Maybe on this page…

YES! A C! (I know it’s hard to pick up, but it was actually a C - click the picture to see the full-size image if you don’t believe me)…

All in a day’s work, now let’s eat…

Curious ideas

Yesterday we were at Kroger’s and I was showing Colin what peaches are and he goes…”Elephants eat peaches” - not sure where he got that idea. All day today he was running around the basement saying “Elephant…eat (while also doing the sign for eat)…peaches.” He also said that Oscar the Grouches pet worm Slimy likes to eat peaches. Of course I can’t get him to eat a peach :)
Later when we went on our nightly walk Colin kept saying “Oh Sevi” - really long and drawn out…kind of in the manner of “oh you silly dog Sevi” - with a roll the the eyes. It was hilarious. He was chatting up a storm the whole walk.

Colin and The New York Times

Thanks to a generous Xmas gift from my parents, we have a subscription to the NYT - good thing too, because Colin loves it. Or, more accurately, he loves the HUGE letters in the Times. He has known his alphabet for quite a while, and the fact that the Times uses large fonts for the first letter of many articles is the best thing Colin has ever seen.

Last night we were getting ready for dinner, and a lot of times we’ll give Colin a book before (sometimes during) dinner so that he’s not thinking about the fact that I’m feeding him some squash or other thing he might battle against.

So yesterday’s Times was sitting on the table, along with his Sesame Street ABC book, and when I went to offer him the book he goes, “no no - papay” (translation: paypay = paper)

I gave him the paper, and he dives in - this isn’t the first time he’s become engrossed in the Times, but you can imagine that it takes on a whole new level of entertainment when he’s sitting in his high chair, with the paper open in front of him as he waits for dinner, poring over the day’s news. He usually does one of two things - he’ll find a great big letter and scream it out with delight, or he’ll scream out a letter and expect it to magically appear, and when it doesn’t he’ll carefully sift through the copy looking for one, all the time saying “mmmm, no no, no X” - followed by a scream of joy when he finds a W (lot more of those than X’s starting articles).

Needless to say, we’re working on getting this on film.

Patriotic

Thanks to Gramma and Grandad for the new outfit, they picked it up while they were at the Greenbrier Hotel in W Va for their 40th wedding anniversary.

Panera and reading

Two big events (from my own point of view).

Last week Colin and I stopped at Panera to get lunch. He likes the broccoli soup there…I debated ordering him a whole bowl, but I didn’t have much choice because they have no kid size soup. It was a good thing because he sat across from me and ate the whole bowl, with a regular size soup spoon. He would rip a piece of bread off and dip it in the soup and then eat a spoonful. He did a great job and didn’t even get that messy. After he finished his bowl he ate part of mine and right in the middle he goes “I happy”. He felt so grown up.

Then last night he was handing me letters in the bathtub and happened to give me a G and O. So I put them together and said “What does this say?” He replied “Go”, so I put the word “STOP” together and he said “Stop”, then he read “Hi” and “Zoo”. It was crazy.

I am really always surprised by the things he can do and he isn’t even 2 yet. I can only imagine it gets more and more surprising when they start asking questions and thinking complicated thoughts on their own.

Photos…

OK Chuck - here you go - I uploaded the pics…on Lake Michigan and after the tumble on the deck, which led to the first popsicle treat.

Colin just requested music upstairs and when I put on Marvin Gaye, he said “No, No, No…Stevie” - which I assume is Stevie Wonder. Then we went out to the car to get another CD and Colin says hi to everyone - yells at the neighbor across the street and the next door neighbor - I guess it is a way to meet people if nothing else :)
